Mission & Community
More than a race. A program that builds young people.
The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program that has run nationally since 1934, with World Championship finals held each July at Derby Downs. Flushing Meadow NYC Soap Box Derby brings that tradition to our community.
We are committed to providing a community program that builds character and confidence in our young people and demonstrates our support of their efforts and achievements. Through project development, design and competition, participants build self-esteem and confidence.

A Soap Box Derby inspires. It is engaging and challenging, and it creates passion. It provides education in science, technology, engineering and math, and it teaches leadership, sportsmanship and perseverance.
It also provides mentorship, competition, friendship and teamwork. It is rooted in family and community, and it creates champions on and off the track. Flushing Meadow NYC Soap Box Derby has a collaboration agreement with Vaughn College that enhances our S.T.E.M. program.

Annual Parade
The annual Flushing Meadow NYC Soap Box Derby Parade is held on the first Saturday in June.
Race Day
Join us on the second Saturday in June for our annual Soap Box Derby races. We look forward to seeing you there!
Our Community
Where Young Champions Grow.
The Derby is about more than the finish line. It is young people building confidence, learning S.T.E.M. skills and sharing the experience with family, mentors and the community.
History
A national tradition, a Queens community.
1934
The national Soap Box Derby youth racing program begins. Its World Championship finals are held each July at Derby Downs.
1984
The first local race is held on July 14, 1984, sponsored by the East Elmhurst Corona Civic Association as the Queens County Soap Box Derby.
1985
The program becomes the Flushing Meadow Soap Box Derby, the name it carries today.
